The City of Stockton, CA is seeking a dynamic individual to fill the role of Senior Planner within the Community Development Department’s Advanced Planning Section. The successful candidate will be responsible for a wide range of planning activities, with a primary focus on long-range land use development, environmental considerations, and housing initiatives, and revitalization of the city’s downtown area. This position’s duties involve leading development projects across various sectors, including residential, mixed-use, commercial, industrial, and institutional proposals. Additionally, the Senior Planner will oversee the preparation of environmental documents in compliance with the California Environmental Quality Act.

Key responsibilities include processing legislative applications such as zone changes and General Plan amendments, addressing Stockton’s housing needs across income levels, and providing consultation and advice to stakeholders including property owners, architects, engineers, contractors, and the public. The Senior Planner will play a crucial role in forming collaborative relationships with stakeholders and presenting information to City Council, Planning Commission, and other relevant groups.

The ideal candidate for the Senior Planner position will possess knowledge and experience in coordinating the preparation of California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) compliant environmental reports, along with a deep understanding of urban design principles and design guidelines. They will demonstrate a strong passion for city planning, with a proven track record of professional experience in downtown revitalization and Specific/Master Plans. Additionally, the position will also need to implement new land use laws as they get adopted as well as implement local policies.

Exceptional time management, organizational, and communication skills are essential, as well as a talent for problem-solving and decision-making. The ideal candidate should possess a thorough understanding of regulatory codes and apply them effectively in their work. The ideal candidate will possess strong analytical and problem-solving skills, a thorough understanding of planning principles, and the ability communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders.
